The most expensive trucks of 2011

Utility can be expensive. Luxury can be expensive. Performance can also be expensive. Try to put all three together, and you’ll wind up with the Most Expensive Trucks of 2011.

For the purposes of this article, we’ll define “truck” as a pickup truck or SUV, as denoted in the Environmental Protection Agency’s breakdown of Market Class. We’ll identify the most expensive trucks by category: Pickups and SUVs, and we’ll exclude commercial trucks from our survey. “Expensive” will be defined by the manufacturer’s suggested retail price including destination, excluding any incentives or discounts. Special editions and factory options will be included in the total price. Our information comes from the car configurator at Cars.com.

A few decades ago, the idea of an expensive luxury truck was almost unthinkable. Trucks and SUVs were designed as work vehicles, and the idea of adding luxury features seemed in opposition to the vehicles’ purpose. Then, in 1998, Lincoln debuted the Navigator, a full-size SUV based on the Ford Expedition. Cadillac responded with the Escalade, and the race was on for the luxury SUV. Ford upped the ante by including luxury features in a pickup truck and slapping on the Lincoln badge and aesthetic to create the Blackwood and the Mark LT, neither of which survived for long. But the concept of adding luxury features to a pickup truck lives on. It is now possible to order a pickup truck with heated and ventilated leather seats, a hi-fi sound system and state of the art navigation, for a level of factory-delivered luxury that pickup owners could only find in the aftermarket just years ago.

IN PICTURES: THE MOST EXPENSIVE TRUCKS OF 2011

Maserati seems poised to debut an SUV concept car at the Frankfurt Auto Show this week. Rumor has it that Lamborghini is developing a successor to its LM002 SUV. The Porsche Cayenne leads sales for its brand — by a wide margin. The luxury SUV, contrary to predictions to the contrary, is alive and kicking.

Fuel economy ratings and the general downturn in the economy may take the shine off of luxury pickup trucks and SUVs, however. Many of the most expensive trucks are also large and demanding to drive and park.

The diesel engine option is a costly one, but unavoidable for trucks that have to do serious work, like towing a horse trailer or fifth wheel. Expect to add another $8,000 to the bottom line in order to get a diesel engine and associated technologies.

There’s no denying the utility of a pickup truck. For those who need the carrying and towing capacity of a big, diesel-powered pickup, nothing else will do. The question becomes whether or not to load up your capable truck with luxury and comfort features that do nothing to improve its utility.

Maybe the new trend will be toward more utilitarian trucks, and more luxurious compact cars. That way, you’ll be more inclined to drive the fuel-efficient vehicle in your fleet, rather than the biggest one.

Until then, we’ll have the most expensive trucks of 2011.

Showroom ready SsangYong SUT-1 in Frankfurt Motor Show

The SsangYong SUT-1 concept debuted in the Geneva Motor Show earlier in March this year. Ssangyong finalised production plans for the pick up truck and they are now ready with the production version of the SUT-1

SsangYong SUT-1 1

SsangYong’s SUT-1 might be a pick-up truck but it is far from a stripped out commercial version of the concept. The truck has a luxurious cabin befitting that of a premium SUV. The spacious cabin can seat five in comfort and gets equipment like a sunroof, a bluetooth stereo, a reverse guide camera and cruise control. The SUT-1 comes with a five link double wishbone suspension for a comfortable ride.

SsangYong SUT-1

The SUT-1 comes with a 2.0 liter diesel power plant which delivers 153 horsepower with a peak torque of 360 Nm. The engine sends power to the rear wheels via a six speed manual transmission or a six speed automatic transmission. The six speed automatic box has a sixth cruising gear for maximum comfort and efficiency on highways.

The SsangYong SUT-1 comes with six airbags, seatbelt pretensioners with load limiters, ISOFIX attachments for child seats, Active Rollover Protection, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).

SsangYong SUT-1 3

The pick-up truck has been styled with Ssangyong’s design philosophy consisting of the words ‘Robust, Specialist, and Premium’. SsangYong say the large deck at the back makes it ideal for loading extreme sports equipment for leisure activities such as camping, skiing and cycling. SsangYong has targeted the vehicle more for civilian purposes rather than utilitarian purposes.

Pixar Chief John Lasseter to Cameo in “Cars 2″

Cars 2
In honor of Pixar’s 25th anniversary, the company’s chief creative officer John Lasseter (Toy Story, A Bug’s Life) will become a hefty yellow pick-up truck named John Lassetire in the upcoming “Cars” sequel.

It was news to me,” said Lasseter, who is also directing the animated film. “I did not know about that, so I was a little surprised. I ended up voicing this character. It was just one line, but now I have a ‘Cars’ character. I’m very excited about that. He’s a good ol’ American pick-up truck, which I think is very appropriate for John Lassetire.

The idea was producer Denise Ream’s, who was inspired by George Lucas’ brief cameo in “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.” Check out a shot of Lassetire below.

In “Cars 2,” slick race car Lightning McQueen and his tow truck friend Mater set off on an around-the-world adventure. Lasseter’s character serves as the pit crew chief for a high-profile race car. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 24th.

Baby girl orphaned after surviving Alberta crash

EDMONTON, Alta. – A baby girl has been orphaned after surviving a crash which killed her parents and her aunt on Christmas Eve.

RCMP said the driver of a mid-sized car lost control on a turn on Highway 855 north of Mundare, a town northeast of Edmonton, and slid into the path of a 1,000 pound pick-up truck in the oncoming lane.

The baby’s parents and aunt were all from Foisy, Alberta.

The infant had to be airlifted to the University of Alberta Hospital, where she remains. The driver of the truck was unhurt.

Weather and road conditions are being blamed for the fatal crash.

Do not stop to know whether the overloading of trucks

Israel National Roads Company, Haifa University and Energy Systems to develop a truck load monitoring system, as long as it lay on the road, the truck can be detected through the time is overloaded.
Allegedly, this monitoring system is the way they pressure on joint research and development last year, power generation products. Pressure generation is the use of road vehicles produced between the pressure to shop on the road piezoelectric material to produce electricity under a new technology. In the study they found that the road in addition to power generation, through collection and analysis of data generated by passing vehicles, the vehicle can detect the load and speed.

Thus, based on their original technology, developed a truck load monitoring system, and in the vicinity of the road in Haifa last week completed the last round of testing. Test shows that the system can accurately measure any speed out of the load of passing vehicles, monitoring data via wireless signal transmission to the receiving device, the traffic control officer under probe data, you can quickly determine whether the vehicle is overloaded after. In addition, the system also has a power function, the power can be made for their own work and contact with other equipment to provide power.

Lu Xiazulei CEO, said the truck overloading is not only a threat to other vehicles will cause damage to the road, but to judge whether a moving vehicle overloading is not easy. They developed such a monitoring system to control vehicle traffic control department of the situation in real time opens up a new way. If at ports, mines, warehouses and other exit of the installation of the system, truck loading conditions prior to departure, the master found that overloading prohibition on the road, which is to ensure traffic safety is very necessary.

Punctuate editor

Governance in China overloading of goods vehicles, can not say much voice, but with little success. The reason is mainly the lack of attention. Can the moon shot at close range in a photograph of the country, if such a troubled life to the issue of public could not find a solution, it is certainly not join the reasonable. In addition, the technical barriers also contributed to the low efficiency of law enforcement. Israel’s lucky hit this technology to become the bane of overloaded goods vehicles, in the application of pressure on the road no less favorable than the power of the mind. Despite its mountain of jade, we have to say that it is a good thing
